Sit, Snacks and Chewing Toys

Today marks Trigger’s third full day in the Byrd household.  He is doing great.  I think I have come to realize that he is very smart.  It is working in our favor right now.  He has already learned how to walk on a leash (though be careful, you may get tripped).   He has learned to sit on command.  Today we practiced going from sit to a lying down position.  He did that very well (and treats helped).  Yesterday, we went on a very LONG walk for a puppy.  My neighbor has a 12 year old Yorkie and she rang my doorbell yesterday afternoon around lunch and asked if I wanted to join them for a walk.  It looks like we are part of the “doggie club” now. :) Let the socialization training begin!  We went for about a mile walk.  Trigger was intrigued by another dog and that alone kept him moving right along.  About 300 feet from home he just sat right down in the middle of the road.  It was his way of saying “I’m pooped.”  So I  just skipped back to the house and he chased me.  Needless to say, he slept great last night.

Trigger hanging out in his "room"

In the picture above, you can see Trigger is out of his crate.  We let him “hang out” in the laundry room when he has gone to bathroom.  He decided he liked the towel that was in his crate, so he pulled it out and sat on it.  Now…if only I could train him to do the laundry while he is in there. :)

His combo of Labrador and German Shepherd is evident in that he has already destroyed one of his chew toys.  :)  I’m just glad it was a toy!   He doesn’t cry in his crate (besides the first 3-4 minutes) and he sleeps at night.  We do have to let him out every 2 1/2 -3 hours at night.  On to the next day….

Our newest adventure: Trigger – our new puppy

Brian and Trigger the day we "picked" him

Brian and I have always found great joy in new adventures.  In the past this has typically involved a road trip and a tent, but today starts a new kind of adventure.  After work, Brian will bring home our new puppy, Trigger.  Yes, it is the same name as Roy Roger’s loyal horse. :)  A client of mine had a chocolate lab, named Cocoa, that had a litter of 8 puppies back on December 21, 2010.  We think the papa is their neighbor’s German Shepherd (thus explaining Trigger’s brown nose).

The adventure is truly for me (Karen), as I have never owned a dog or any animal for that matter.  The closest experience to taking care of animals was at Phantom Ranch when I worked as wrangler for several years with the horses.  Thus, I thought this would be a fun and interesting “adventure” to write about in a blog.  Brian is very excited to be bringing home the puppy.  He has wanted a dog for a while.  Growing up, Brian had miniature schnauzers.   With a Lab and Shepherd mix…I think Trigger is going to be everything but miniature.  My sister-in-law and her husband have two large dogs: Great Pyrenees (Brie) and a Newfoundland (Guinness).  Can you just picture what it will be like when we all have them in the same room? :)

Let the TRUE countdown begin…

Well, it is Tuesday (June 23) and we are 1 1/2 weeks away from the wedding. Can you believe that!!?? Boy, time had sure flown. Brian and I are truly excited to see everyone two Saturdays from today. We are also excited to say that most of the details are done. Now we can just hope for beautiful weather.

Many people have asked us “What should we wear?” Our answer “Be comfortable.” It will be a warm July morning. Between the wedding ceremony and the Dixie boat ride, you will likely be outside for about 1 1/2 hours. The reception is indoors, but keep in mind the exposure to the sunshine. Feel free to wear a hat on the boat. Sunscreen is recommended as well.

For those of you who are around the Friday night before the wedding (July 3), you are welcome to come to our house for a bonfire and fireworks around 9 pm. We ask that if you do come, please bring your own drinks and your own chairs (if possible). We have a few chairs, but unfortunately not enough for everyone.
If you have any additional questions, just drop us a note!
